FAIRLDS would earn far more credibility if it adhered to what Joseph and Oliver taught instead of chasing the latest academic fads wherever they lead.
FAIRLDS still promotes SITH (the stone-in-the-hat narrative), insisting that Joseph and Oliver misled everyone about the translation, the same way FAI|RLDS insists they misled everyone about the New York Cumorah.
Then at the 2025 conference, FAIRLDS features a presentation to show the narrative about the gold plates is plausible.
One commenter made the obvious point regarding SITH:
Does it really matter since Joseph didn't even translated from the golden plates as depicted in paintings but received revelation from a stone in a hat with the plates frequently not even in the same room or under a cloth?
Another one chimed in:
and yet think of how much time & energy was utterly wasted making, writing, carrying around and protecting those gold alloy plates was when all Joe Smith actually needed to translate them was a stone placed inside of a hat...
Yet here's Scott Gordon's post:
At the FAIR Conference, another argument against the Book of Mormon and gold plates was put to rest.
Josh Coates reported he did over 4,164,048,000 math problems and tested four things related to the idea of the Gold Plates.
1. He asked, "Can a bunch of plates made of gold alloy be about “golden plates size” and weigh less than 60 lbs?"
Yes.
There are over 500 million ways to do this.
2. "Can you put enough writing on valid set of physical plates to hold the entire text of the Book of Mormon?"
Yes.
He found that there were more than 3 million ways to fit all of the Book of Mormon onto the plates. He used a number of different written languages to try this.
3. "Can you do all that and have it be consistent with the 19th century historical record of reported descriptions?"
Yes.
He checked all of the witness descriptions and found that they met the requirements.
4. "Can you do all that and have it be consistent with the writing size and material found in ancient artifacts from the old world and the new world?"
Yes.
He was able to demonstrate this.
Videos are still being made today saying this isn't possible. But it is.
He repeatedly reminded us, "It's just math."
